Intersections: Gender and Sexuality in Asia and the Pacific
Issue 42, August 2018

Coombs Building, ANU

Christine Stewart

Dim and turning corridors, sometimes splashed
    by sunlight, which blunders in,
    pauses, and then

    (hearing from behind closed doors
the murmur of grave voices in a seminar
the chatter of a thesis on a keyboard
the awesome silence of a new hypothesis)

it turns, and sneaks back out
    because it knows
that there is more to life than numbered footnotes.
    ca. 1965
