Intersections: Gender, History and Culture in the Asian Context

Information about Matriliny, Sexuality, Sexual Citizenship and Gender

edited by Salmah-Evalina Lawrence

Societies with matrilineal descent often have systems of governance in which women are prominent. This issue of Intersections explores whether matrifocal, including matrilineal, societies in the Asia Pacific region also differ in questions of sexuality and sexual citizenship or belonging. It engages with questions such as: How is sexuality conceived in matrifocal societies? How is difference in sexuality negotiated? In what ways does the global discourse of sexual citizenship and corresponding rights shape sexual identities in these societies?"
